How CPC works: Flowchart for Google Adwords

Cost-Per-Click (CPC) marketing is a great way to drive immediate, targeted traffic to your website in order to increase conversions and profits. The major search engines all offer CPC under different names: Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, and Microsoft adCenter on Bing (formerly MSN/Live.com).

When you create a CPC campaign at one of the major search engines, you are advertising to a market that is already searching for a product, service or information—so your CPC ad places your business and website in a prime location to be found by potential customers.

The images and explanations in this post use Google as an example to illustrate how CPC works; Google is a great place to start with a CPC marketing campaign because they currently handle the largest number of searches in the U.S. (65% according to a report released by ComScore.) If you do a CPC campaign on Yahoo! or Bing, the process would work in a similar way.
